Description:

Girl & the Goat has been serving fun foods, craft beers, and making wine in a rustic and bad ass environment since summer 2010. The restaurant opens at 4:30 every day, and stays open until 11pm on weeknights and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays (until those last late night eaters scrape their fork across the plate for the last time, or finish licking their plates until they´re shiny and clean). The Goat´s menu is divided into three categories: Vegetable, Fish, and of course Meat--while vegetable, fish, or meat are respectively the main stars of their categories, there are crossovers in each area so you´ll get a little bit of everything. Bread is baked daily, and there are always new creations on the menu.

Girl & the Goat sits in the West Loop smack dab in the Randolph Restaurant Corridor, but the location is still gritty enough to appeal to the chef’s integrity. The Goat has a variety of seating choices, including a comfortable lounge, bar seats, standard table seating, and four seats close enough to the kitchen line that you might be asked to help.

Girl & the Goat blended their own wine, and it´s tasty. There are beers on tap from Three Floyd’s and a couple others. If you´re lucky, you might come across the elusive collaboration beers that Stephanie personally crafted with a couple of beer buddy cohorts. In addition to tap beers, there´s also a bunch of bottles to choose from. Girl & the Goat is open 7 days a week, because The Goat is a tireless beast, and besides, who needs rest anyway? Girl & the Goat accepts reservations but always welcomes walk-ins, nomads, adventurers, and those of you who don’t like to plan.

About the Chef:

Stephanie Izard’s guilty pleasures include Taco Bell, Lean Cuisine, and Bon Jovi. She feels most comfortable in a kitchen, drinking a beer, or on a farm. Most of her power, just like Sampson comes from her impressive hair. She swims faster than she cooks. On most nights she can be found cooking at Girl & the Goat with a big smile on her face. Stephanie´s last name, Izard, inspired her to name the restaurant Girl & the Goat. "Izard" is the name of goat that can be found in the Pyrenees Mountains. In fall 2012, Stephanie and the Boka team will be opening Little Goat across the street from Girl & the Goat.

The rumors are true - this is one of the best, if not the best restaurant in Chicago. Like the many legions came before us, we tried to get a reservation but could not secure one (unless we wanted to come back a month later and dine at 10:30 pm on a Sunday). But the local advice turned out to be true - show up early, leave your name with the hostess and grab a stool at the bar. We actually got seated at a table in minutes (maybe the stars were aligned for us that day).

One word of caution - this restaurant is for serious foodies only. The menu is eclectic and the restaurant is full of energy (aka packed and noisy). But if you are a serious foodie, you will have found your Chicago Mecca. One side note - you have to love TripAdvisor. They rank this restaurant #29 after a couple of pancake houses and popcorn shops. Another reason why we created this website - only Certified Foodies can post restaurants and reviews.

The service was not only smooth but friendly and entertaining. Our steward for this adventure was Alison from Louisville, and she could not have been better for this restaurant. She knows her food and wine, listens attentively and helped us create an amazing experience.

I love goat, but I also know it´s an acquired taste. Obviously the Chef does too because the menu has a wide selection of seafood, meats and even vegetarian options. We tried a selection of items, including the panfried Shishito peppers and the roasted cauliflower. The hit of the night was the escargot ravioli (who would have thought to make that?). We also loved the steamed little neck clams that were laced with crispy black beans. For our main course we shared the crisped braised pork shank that included a side of kimchee. Every course was uniquely crafted and amazingly delicious. I love restaurants that make me think, and all I thought of all night was - how did she come up with this? I couldn´t leave the Girl and the Goat without having Goat, so Allison obliged with a side of goat empenada.

Hats off to Stephanie Izard and the amazing team she has assembled at the Girl and the Goat. You have earned your place in restaurant lore among the best of the best. This is without doubt a place for Foodies.
